did the election not change anything? >> the election changed a lot. the election changed the underlying power dynamic between the two parties. you know that great line of al capone's, you can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can get with a kind word alone? the president now has a gun in his hand. the bush tax cuts expire and that makes the republicans sweat. it's a consequence of losing elections, and it's going to be a very uncomfortable month for the two parties. >> mary, what i don't understand, i hear from a lot of republicans, well, the president doesn't have a mandate on this, but both republicans and democrats for a month now have been saying, look, the choice was very clear between these two men. they couldn't be more different. people have said on our program, and yet all of a sudden, if the choice is so clear and before the vote, didn't the american people make that choice, and so shouldn't the president get some capital on this tax issue? >> well, if the exit polls are accurate, and i believe that they are by almost a 10-point m

that's how we win elections. we don't win elections by insulting voters. >> in the wake of the election a lot of republicans, not just jindal, are doing soul searching about how they can better appeal to groups that voted for obama. romney apparently didn't get that memo. joining me now, cnn contributors and republican strategist, mary matalin and charles blow. you have been tweeting extensively on this. you said you were livid at governor romney, that the comments were offensive. you said he needs to take a look in the mirror. what do you mean? >> i think he needs to figure out what were his own flaws. what were the deficiencies with his campaign. i get it, okay, he was talking to 300 of his top donors, people who raised almost $1 billion and he needs to explain why he lost and it's easier to blame somebody else than to look in the mirror and blame yourself for your shortfalls but i think it's mitt romney who has to figure out why did he get 27% with the hispanic vote. mary worked for george w. bush white house.

what's more, white voters played a big role in the president's re-election. although romney won white voters nationwide the picture isn't quite so clear-cut when you look at swing states. in iowa, wisconsin, new hampshire, colorado and minnesota, president obama did better among white voters than either john kerry or al gore did. president obama won in some key swing states with predominantly white voters. many of them live in the suburbs or rural areas. take iowa, where white voters made up 93% of the electorate. more than half of those voters, 51%, backed president obama to 47% for romney. it was the same breakdown in new hampshire where white voters were also 93% of the electorate and 51% voted for president obama. there's also the fact that many new hampshire voters live in rural areas, yet president obama won those rural voters by 16 points, 57-41%. as all the numbers suggest, it's not quite as simple as congressman ryan suggests. urban voters can't take all the credit for the president's win. joining me now is cnn contributor david frum who has a lot to

but that was pre-election, this is post election. you know the pressure i think is on all of them but let's remember the pressure for the president. one of the things that is difficult about a coalition that puts you in office is every part of the coalition wants to protect something. they think they helped put this guy back in office. so you already hear folks on the left saying do not touch social security. do not touch medicare. there is no need to do that. there's pressure on that side and on the side of him that said in his acceptance speech last night, and i'm going to work and i'm going to -- we're going to get this done. so i think the pressure on the president is probably even more so than that on republicans. >> gloria, do you agree with that, congressional approval levels are at an all-time low. >> yeah, like 17% or something like that. i think there is pressure on all of them. i think what you have is a divided country and they have this huge speed bump, the question of tax cuts for the rich. they have to get around that.
